RS#137: being nosey…..
So I have been doing some research and have been looking at Rucks’ results lately trying to figure out what he may be looking at for a finish time at IMFLA 2007. During this research I have discovered we have ourselves a good old fashioned Clydesdale throwdown on our hands here in 2007.In each of the whopping TWO triathlons he has done so far this year a name keeps coming up, this name has been a few places ahead of him each time. Sometimes its close and sometimes it is not, it just depends on which race you are looking at. I do not know this person and, I am sure he is very nice and is a good athlete, but what I do know is that there should be a bull’s-eye on his back as far as Rucks is concerned.
Now these two athletes are both signed up for the Waterfront triathlon, which will be round 3 in this smackdown. So far Rucks is getting his backside handed to him. At gulf coast triathlon it wasn’t even close, he got his clock cleaned. Even if you add back 10 or 15 minutes to his time in order to take his 2 flats into consideration ,he still got creamed by 15 minutes. At Mach Tenn it was closer , the man he had out swam at gulf coast by 2 minutes and 36 seconds has now out swam him by 2 minutes and 34 seconds in a much shorter swim (wander why? Oh yeah- see RS#152). He went on to beat Rucks by a good 7 minutes but that was mostly on the run (I have spoken with Marty at OSB and they are STILL working furiously around the clock to fix this problem ). So the waterfront will be a litmus test for Rucks’ progress in the swim and run arenas since his 2 big season openers. No wetsuits to fumble with and drag through the swim and a hometown advantage should give him a little edge but….. you know Rucks……..
Here is where the plot thickens, the piece de resistance if you will. With a little more research over on the IMFLA page, I have discovered that the final throw down will be on November 3rd at………. you guessed it IMFLA 2007. I am sure these 2 will clash a few more times between now and then but the final outcome of this smackdown will not be determined until this race. After hours and weeks and months, and maybe even years of training; the dust will settle and we will have a winner and a loser; glory or shame. I like Rucks’ odds, he has determination and drive (and a “little” more weight to lose) , however the question is: “Will Rucks be true to form and effectively beat himself “or “Will Rucks rise above all this sophomoric nonsense , get the kinks worked out, throw down, and race like someone who can actually get his pants on in the morning without any help?” ……………
Only time will tell

The following took place at 0530 in the morning at my house a couple weeks ago. Rucks was there giving The Missile a ride to the ATL
Rucks: OOOH!! Gibson I like that t-shirt, I need one of those
Gibson(grogily): I think its an XL, do you want it?
Rucks : let me see the back
Gibson: (realizing what was on the back) Maybe thats not such a good idea , unless you are REALLY into irony
Affter I had turned around to show him the back
Rucks: A@#$hole……..
The shirt was a QR t-shirt that has a nice QR symbol on the front and a very simple statement on the back:
“First out of the water, First off the Bike“

Case in point: RS#152: “How did you get your wetsuit off while you were still swimming!!!!????” Random racer in T1 to Rucks at Mach Tenn 25th Anniversary Race on 06-02-07
Rucks had a pretty good race on Saturday. He placed 3rd in the under 40 Cydesdale Calssification and took home some hardware.
Swim: 24:15 Well I guess waiting for the bike like PCB Halfironman to start all the drama was not good enough for Rucks this weekend, so he decided to get right to it on the swim. He gets a good start settles into a good pace, things are going well and he is in a nice rythm. First buoy, makes the turn and something is not right. His wetsuit seems to be filling with water and he feels like he is swimming with a “drag parachute”. So unbelievably, and much like the whole taking the brake calipers off the bike incident, he decides to take the FULLSUIT arms off , pull the FULLSUIT down to his waist, tie it up like its an Ohio State Football sweatshirt around his waist, and then complete the swim(probably with a drag coefficient equal to that of a solo swimmer with a dead body in-tow).
Bike: 43:12 Solid effort here. Looks like the new bike was worth the 7 month wait (too bad he didnt have it for PCB 1/2)
Run: 31:54 : This was the area that needed a LOT of improvement and it looks like his run is going in the right direction. Under 8 minute pace for the big man is definitely progress….
Back to the wetsuit issue. Rucks had made the big mistake of zipping his own wetsuit up on race morning and had accidentally activated the quick release before he started. When he made the turn at the first buoy it popped open and started filling up. Moral of the story :
1) get someone else to help you zip up your wetsuit.
2) Dont take wetsuit advise from Rucks….. He sucks

RS#158:“Did you find everything you needed last night Mr Rucks?” Hilton Garden Inn Manager in Atlanta GA, to a puzzled Rucks on his way out to work one day in early 2005.
As we all know from RS# 219 Rucks is on the road a lot for USX and stays in motels for long periods at a time.
Well evidently our boy was having trouble sleeping, so he gets one of these Ambien sleeping pills to help him along with this malady. Maybe you can see where this is going…
The good news is that he got a really good nights sleep that night. And the bad news? Well…..bare with me here and keep in mind that this is 2005, which means this predates his current svelte triathlete build (nice way of stating he has lost about 60LBS since then)
Ok back on track: Things are hazy for Rucks , however the question posed by the manager is helping him put together some of the events that had transpired the previouse evening.
Rucks: “What do you mean?” (fishing for clues)
Manager :” Well I was curious if you found everything you needed?”
Rucks: “I Dont know what you are talking about” (trying to be casual but really starting to put 2 and 2 together and becoming more mortified by the second)
Manger: “You were down here last night”
Rucks:” No I wasnt” (things are becoming all to clear, hurry get out the door….)
Manager: “Yes you were, actually. No shirt, black Jockey briefs, arms full of snacks, it was definitley you Mr Rucks”
Rucks: In that Rucks swagger we all know ” Oh yeah…. THAT……. I found everything I needed thanks. See ya“
Rucks had taken the Ambien and started sleep walking all the way down to the food kiosk. When he got there without a shirt on (or any other sort of decent bodily covering for that matter ) he proceeded to load up an armfull of snacks that could have satiated a horse. The next morning he wakes up amidst a pile of wrappers, crumbs, crackers, Reese’s Pieces, and empty diet coke bottles (I guess the diet part helped him reconcile this as a healthy snack). Groggily he gets showered and ready and heads downstairs, not thinking too much about the wierdness over in the bed. Untill he gets to the front desk…..
As he heads out the door after the conversation he thinks: “Sweet Mother!!!!, I have to say Hi to that dude for the next 5 weeks…..”
